No One Takes It
The security within
For everything meant to be lived here,
because we cannot take it with us.
There is something in you
no storm has reached.
A house. A name.
A title on a door.
My hands are full.
So why do I feel empty?
The world is full.
And still we reach,
as if we must hold all of it.
Rain finds the roof.
Time finds the face.
What the world gives,
the world takes back.
Every wall is borrowed stone.
So I hold tighter.
I lock every door.
I run faster, gather more,
and lose the night to guarding it.
We rush to gather what can be taken,
and miss what can't.
Then, in the quiet, one breath.
It asked for nothing.
It was here all along.
Beneath the gripping,
something was never touched.
Everything I hold can fall.
What holds me cannot.
My hands open.
Nothing leaves that was ever mine.
Safe, not because nothing falls,
but because I don't.
No one gave it.
No one takes it.
Keep what you can.
Lose what you must.
You were never in danger
of losing yourself.
